Hiking Around Tucson and Arizonawith Kim BeckPicacho Peak
This strenuous 4-mile roundtrip hike is surprising and breathtaking in more than one way-definitely not for inexperienced hikers, pets or children after the saddle, which is about half-way. The trail stays consistently rugged and rocky from the saddle to the peak. Cables help with the "ropeless" rock-climbing that is necessary to reach the top. Gloves are recommended. Camping is allowed in the marked campgrounds. Spring brings a magnificent wildflower display. Picacho is home to the most significant Civil War battle in Arizona-making it a historical point as well. An annual re-enactment in early March tells that story. |
