Hikers
who wish to hike with others for safety reasons, or for the fun and
experience of meeting new people, may want to join a hiking club.
The Southern Arizona Hiking Club, which has been around
for close to four decades, has approximately 2000 members. The SAHC
schedules and conducts hikes in and around Tucson for the enjoyment of
its members. A monthly bulletin is published and sent to members. A list
of the scheduled hikes, as well as information in regards to club
happenings and subjects of interest to hikers, such as conservation
news, are included.
Members also have the option of participating in trail preservation and clearing.
Approximately 50-60 hikes per month are offered and include
different classifications of hikes determined by mileage, terrain,
elevation, and pace. An annual due of $15 per individual or $20 per
family is cheap for the outstanding entertainment value offered through
hiking. For more information on joining or attending a hike as a guest,
call 751-4513.
Other organizations affiliated with hiking in and around Tucson include: The Sierra Club at 620-6401 and The Senior Trekkers Club (for those over 50). Contact Emory Westlake, the 72-year-old president and founder, at 520/296-7795.
